Teach Emotional Intelligence in Schools. By Daniel Goleman

A Chinese friend writes that last week President Xi, the new national leader, told a graduating class that Emotional Intelligence is “more important than IQ,” and a competence that should be pursued in the workplace. The news made the front page of Chinese newspapers.
I’d add a few details. First, let’s be clear: for workplace success, IQ matters, too – just not in the same way that EI does. IQ remains the best predictor of which level of job someone can hold. For the professions (medicine, teaching, accounting and the like) you need an IQ roughly a standard deviation among the norm – that is, around 115 or higher.
But once you are in that position, IQ does not guarantee that you will be outstanding in your performance, nor that you will emerge as a leader. A main reason IQ no longer predicts success once you are on the job is that everyone you are competing with is about as smart as you are. That’s when emotional intelligence adds great value.
The workplace competencies that independent studies have identified as distinguishing outstanding performers and leaders from the average are largely based on emotional intelligence – and as you go higher up the organizational ladder, they have greater and greater value.
I have a suggestion for China – and any other country that recognizes the value of emotional intelligence for its people and its workers. Teach these life skills in school, beginning in early childhood and continuing to university.
A meta-analysis of more than 200 separate studies that compared students with emotional intelligence-based programs and those without them found that positive behavior increased 10 percent, negative went down 10 percent, and academic achievement scores jumped up 11 percent.
These programs, called “social/emotional learning” or SEL, take little or no time from the standard academic topics, yet let children learn better. Singapore is the first nation to mandate that all children there receive SEL.
These are the competencies that distinguish star leaders from average. Teaching these life skills in schools could turn them into leadership academies.
And the good news: if you didn’t master in earlier life the emotional intelligence abilities you need for your job, it’s never too late. Get a coach.

The Magnificent Opportunity for Keeping Alive our Civilization

Everyone have a certain reputation and a history of social interaction with others, within the geographical and social environment when we live in, which we have been gaining (or may be losing) progressively in our lives, through of which we have managed to acquire a certain level of prestige, credibility and trust of others within the social environment in which we live and interact with others.
This reputation we have managed to achieve from our own social behavior, that is, from our actions, our attitudes, to show the level of transparency, our loyalty, our ability to empathize with others, etc.. In short, are the result of every successive decisions, attitudes and behaviors that have been taking over our lives, when we interact with other members of our community or social environment in which we live.
Even today it still holds true, for example, in towns, rural settings, suburbs and other social community in which lives a relatively limited number of people, do virtually all know each other, and if not known references available or somebody, it is always possible to obtain information about your reputation, goodwill or confidence level that it deserves, through the other members of the social community. In these environments socially globalized within each individual community, reflecting the high level of physical proximity and social interaction between its members, it is relatively easy to have information about the reputation, prestige and the confidence level or social value, deserved given to any person belonging to a family, before deciding to enter to establish any relationship with her was this the type that would be: either sentimental, business, employment or business. Moreover, these social communities were rules and norms of behavior to avoid imbalances and ensure stability.
In these environments, a person who has acquired a reputation level is not good enough, it can hardly make their way successfully in any setting or social relationship, and finally a person with bad reputation is finally identified, marginalized and would have to abandon the social community in the which was interacting, because of not meeting the standards of social behavior, jeopardizing the stability of the community, in order to restore their reputation and thus their life and social interaction in another different environment.
How many times have we heard the phrase: Do not know. What family member? This makes it how to were inquired and sought to obtain (this is still heard in many towns), information about the reputation and confidence he deserved offered to a person, assuming that reported directly to the prestige or reputation that it had its own family, which his ancestors had acquired over the years. In fact, if a family member committed acts harmful counterproductive to his own reputation, that directly harmed the reputation of all members of their direct social environment, IE his own family or any person or group of people who were related socially with her. Therefore, not surprisingly, that based on the behavior of certain members of a family or social community, this would be decided by sending him out from the family or the social community, so that individual did not damage the honor and community-acquired dignity over the years all up and ancestors, thus avoiding that would harm the reputation and future of each of its members.
As indicated above, there are still, today, many communities ideological, religious, social and ethnic, which have rules and / or rules of ethics and behavior, which are transmitted from father to son and found to be impregnable to all members, so making them mandatory compliance, ensured that the community available to a level of prestige, reputation and honor worthy of their ancestors, of his blood, his family and those who have given honor and value their surnames.
If we refer specifically to the civilization that both historically and economically turn out to be the most advanced, the Western countries and in particular those involved in the globalized neo-capitalism (which is included in the U.S., Japan and the Western European countries, Spain among them), it appears that issues related to social stability, values, ethics, reputation and prestige of the communities, are gradually being relegated at the expense of issues and objectives purely on money, which may report a profit, as the only objective.
If we apply exactly the same approach of lack of social globalization environmental field, the grounds and arguments We would complement would be very similar. In local communities of all life, the important before globalization, it happened that had a sense of responsibility and environmental ecosystem, since any inappropriate activity and unconscious that could be committed against the environment and the environment , would be immediately reflected and transferred to the natural environment, which we implied that the short to medium term would not adversely affect our level of stability and environmental habitat.
This happens since man went from a nomadic to be sedentary behavior. The moment that man began to have a sedentary behavior, which took place several thousand years, with the sole purpose of making your life more comfortable and quiet, this is realized that their behavior socially and environmental had to change and adapt to new circumstances and new life. This meant having to set both social norms and behavior, and in terms of environmental protection. Some examples are: Initiation into the crops and raising animals in captivity, setting standards of social behavior, pest control, waste management and waste, organization of the social environment, etc..
In these circumstances, the man had to adapt to their new situation and any behavior to change drastically in order to guarantee the future of this new way of life.
Well, the situation currently is living humanity, following introduction of mass production or mass production systems and the massive exploitation of fossil fuel resources, and principally and ultimately by economic globalization unstoppable in which we currently find ourselves, can resemble both in terms of importance and of importance to the transition from nomadic to sedentary behaviors behaviors, which gives us to understand the enormity of the changes to which we are facing and we will having to continue to confront, not only economically, but as much more importance and significance, social and environmental level, it is essential and a priority to establish new standards and rules for this new “era”, which are aimed at finding a balance priority both social and environmental, which will guide us and allow us to achieve the medium term, the usual development but Sustainable Economic, avoiding a major priority to the unconscious, irresponsible and dangerous quest for financial gain without regard level of any environmental or social stability.
What happens is that this premise, the pursuit of purely economic benefit and immediate, although this has to get by sacrificing or seriously endanger the stability to environmental and social adopting, at most, as the only restriction and limitation when making decisions, some rules that do not exceed the standards set by current legislation of the country which it has been shown to be completely inadequate and extremely damaging to strength for the same balance of the system, because the legal standards set by each country have been conceived and executed at the mercy and favor of their own economic interests, which consist simply of economic benefit in the short term, without any care in other areas much more important medium term, because the consequences in the medium / long term these decisions bring about environmental and social balance are really dramatic, as we have begun to witness and suffer and in our own flesh.
As I say, the pursuit of purely economic objectives and short-term has become today in many countries (mainly in the capitalist countries and neo-capitalism) in the main and only object of his effort and concentration, by all political powers , economic and social that are present in each country.
This destructive power basically started at the beginning of the twentieth century in the U.S., following the industrial revolution which introduced the system of mass production, as an introduction to the oil era.
This industrial revolution has meant, throughout the twentieth century at the exponential increase in economic activity, which quickly helped improve the economic resources available and made available to the Company, with a consequent improvement in overall power purchasing their cultural level and their own quality of life. This fact is indisputable.
What is questionable, as discussed above is that, just as it has improved on average and substantially over the past century, the economic resources available (subject to the cyclical swings typical of the economy) is that, similarly, has been neglected rich heritage and tremendous efforts to maintain (let alone improve), ethical values, and levels of integration and social responsibility and environmental awareness that had been acquired and transmitted in local social environments with such thoroughness of parents to children over the past centuries.
In short, the twentieth century has contributed effusive and effectively to economic globalization Worldwide however, keeping in mind that this must be accompanied by both an unconditional ethical globalization with global regulation and global standards, in order to maintain social stability, as an ecological globalization, also regulated and coordinated. These are our great unfinished and are the leading cause of the systemic crisis we are suffering, which is initially not economic, it is started many years ago to create ethical and ecological level and is only now, at the time that has shown a visible to our pockets in the form of economic crisis, when we realized the gravity of the situation we have created. This both social and ecological imbalance, is nothing new, since it began just at the time that they began to implement the new strategic economic mass production, which had an impact on social and ecological stability, since no attention was paid some aspects to be represented really key, which were the social and ecological.
Today, most of the news we saw in the media are related to disasters and conflicts at both social and ecological problems due mainly to growing imbalances that have been created throughout the last century, for failing paid attention to them. These are serious but logical consequences of our unconscious decisions which were adopted in the past that were not good solutions globally good solutions but only at the economic punches short term, inevitably would drag us to a dramatic situation not only economic but also ecological and social medium term, as indeed has happened.
Scenario 1 : Escape Forward: Challenge for the Twenty-First Century: Achieving the globalization of society and the protection of the environment and ecology, in order to achieve a new era. The Age of Globalization Humanity sustainable ecosystem.
Scenario 2 : Escape to back: Otherwise, if we fail to reach the level of globalization to social and environmental objectives, we are in grave danger of survival of humanity in the current globalized system and in these conditions would enter a new process of clear reversal in the evolutionary progress of civilization in history, where, after numerous and inevitable social conflicts in order to grab the best and most productive lands and energy resources, we´ll get into a new era based on local economies, individual independent from each other, in which stability is achieved achieve both social and ecological, and economic, independently and individually by each of the new isms that constitute this new form of anti-global civilization and individualized.
And the question for me to throw up is as follows:
With which of these 2 scenarios we want to stay?
For if our choice is the most reasonable and desirable scenario, scenario 1 would then know we are not waiting to get to work immediately, to partner for a common purpose and require a responsible and peaceful preferably, all our leaders and powers, so clearly taken all necessary measures and policies aimed at progressive scan stability environmentally and socially, which can be achieved once final.
In short, this represents, in essence, “THE BIG TEST OF SURVIVAL AND PROGRESS OF CIVILIZATION IS”, and depends on us, with help from our awareness for the need and importance of acting, our responsibility and our majority social force and free, we are finally able to persuade and convince the other leaders and powers to take the path indicated in Scenario 1.
Otherwise, if not capable, as Company or as a Civilization, to address the way described by Scenario 1, we should prepare ourselves to witness mentalizing and over the next few years (perhaps decades, for those who resist), a progressive increase of the imbalances and environmental disasters and environmental, social tensions and conflicts and thus of economic crises that this will lead, which all these, we have already begun to witness and therefore run the risk of get used to.
It should end by saying that these systemic imbalances are shown irrefutably in a much more visible and pronounced in precisely those countries that have led and represented the flagships of economic neoliberalism, and therefore, being these countries that have benefited most from economic growth during the period of growth and height of the neoliberal capitalist system, are precisely those countries where the greatest negative impact will occur as a result of the serious imbalances in the system, because that will have to descend from a position of economic status, need for energy resources and average living standards, much higher.

Why the Situation in Spain Is Better Than It Seems

There is a growing feeling that Spain’s economy has never before been in such dire straits. It is certainly true that the country’s recent performance has been less than inspiring, given that in a few years it has gone from being one of the most solvent and dynamic countries in the world to the sorry state it is in now. The most telling sign of this fall from grace is the current rate of unemployment. More than one in five of Spain’s active population is unemployed, while youth unemployment is double that figure. Worse still, the indecision and continuous U-turns of the Spanish government give the distinct impression that Spain is simply ungovernable.

Spain’s situation is, however, notably better than it was in the mid-1990s, despite many parallels. Like then, the public deficit stands at 7%, public debt has reached 70% of gross national product (and continues to grow at an alarming rate), there is 20% unemployment, and the reaction of the financial markets is only serving to make a bad situation worse. And just like then, Spain is highly likely to have a change of government soon.

Even with the destruction of nearly 2 million jobs since the crisis began, there are still more than 18 million people working in Spain, 50% more than the average for the two decades from the start of Spain’s democratic transition to the mid-1990s. The large nationalized industrial sector created during Franco’s dictatorship, which weighed heavily on public finances and Spain’s capacity for competitiveness, has disappeared. Just 15 years ago, those state-run firms were incapable of operating outside the monopolistic conditions they had enjoyed in Spain until then. Now they are global companies competing successfully worldwide, and the industrial sectors they once formed are fully liberalized, resulting in significant price reductions for businesses and individual consumers alike.

The concentration of Spain’s banking sector that began at the end of the 1980s was followed by an intense internationalization process that produced stronger and more efficient banks. The latest chapter in this transformation of Spanish banking has been played out in recent months with the disappearance of the country’s anachronistic savings banks.

Moreover, Spain now has impressive modern infrastructures that have left the country well equipped to handle substantial increases in industrial activity in coming years. Even more important, the population of Spain is not only better qualified, but also more entrepreneurial. In the mid-1990s, the Spanish economy still had an awfully long way to go on the road to modernization. Today the country faces considerable challenges, but it is ready to address them with the experience gained from its own successes and based on lessons learned from mistakes made in recent years.

One of the most important challenges is the need to make deep reforms in the public sector based on the principle of less and better government. The huge public accounts imbalance and an unsustainable bureaucracy are the main obstacle to recovery in Spain. Government borrowing grows at a double-digit pace while profitable and well managed small and medium enterprises are go under just because a lack of working capital, caused largely by the government’s slowness in paying suppliers. The World Bank was quite right when it described Spain, in its “Doing Business” report, as one of the countries in the world where setting up a new business is most difficult and costly.

Likewise the labor market urgently needs reform. The extraordinary difficulty of lowering the pace of wage growth has led to dramatically increased layoffs, while unfair and inefficient segmentation of markets prevents young people from getting their foot on the work ladder.

The questions to ask are Can the job be done? and Is it politically possible? The answer to both is Yes. Spanish society is in an infinitely better position than some leaders would have us think. The Spanish do not aspire to sit around just watching the clouds float by, even if current Prime Minister Zapatero did let slip recently that this is precisely what he aims to do when he leaves his job. Spanish society has plenty of talent, and it has innovative, hard-working, creative, and entrepreneurial people who are capable of rising to difficult challenges and willing to solve their own problems. The most popular Spanish politicians in recent times have been those who have demonstrated austerity and rigor as political values; those who have frittered away public money have been held in contempt. Recognition of this fact paved the way for the approval of a constitutional reform, without further debate, capping Spain’s public deficit.

There is also ample scope for reducing public spending in ways that would not necessarily imply drastic cuts in social and welfare services, and that would not have an unacceptable effect on short-term growth. The extraordinary growth in state income during the decade that preceded the crisis permitted governments to indulge in excesses that went far beyond what any public would deem acceptable. Now, not only can a well-ordered retreat be achieved with relative ease, but it is a prerequisite for economic recovery and social progress.

Finally, Spain is deeply committed to the European Union, but that does not mean it expects others to solve its problems. Quite the opposite. The country wants to play its part in strengthening the European Union, and to do so under its own steam. That’s why it unsurprisingly has no problem with its European partners’ words of warning, and they are not viewed as a threat to Spain’s sovereignty.
